Cafe ALDAG is situated in St. George’s Christian Centre, Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead and aims to provide fulfilling long term work experience for twelve adults with a learning disability by developing catering skills and in doing so to provide a valued service to the church community and local people.
The young people learn a variety of work skills supported by a paid manager and a team of volunteers. The cafe is open on Mondays and Tuesdays, during school term time, from 9.00am – 2.30pm and serves snacks, drinks and light lunches. We also provide refreshments for conferences held in the Christian Centre as required.
The cafe manager gives each of the young people support in learning several roles, thus widening their catering experience. Front of house skills include taking orders, delivering food and taking payment. Kitchen skills continue to focus on preparing vegetables, making sandwiches, hot meals and hot drinks, and presentation of food. Kitchen hygiene remains a high priority; the team continually develop their catering and serving skills regularly undertaking training in Health and Hygiene in Food Preparation.
In 2017 a Mole Valley District Council unannounced Food and Hygiene inspection led to the cafe receiving the highest rating, a 5* on its Food Hygiene Rating Certificate.
