Open Doors Café

The Open Doors Café can be found in the Dorking United Reformed Church (a few doors down from our shop in West Street) every Thursday from 10am to 2pm during school term time. The cafe serves a variety of cakes, drinks and light lunches.

The café is a partnership between the church and ALDAG and aims to provide fulfilling long term work experience for four adults with a learning disability by developing hospitality skills and in doing so to provide a valued service to the church community and local people.

The young people learn a variety of work skills supported by a paid manager and volunteer.

The cafe manager provides each of the young people support in learning several roles, thus widening their catering experience.

Hospitality skills include taking orders, presenting food attractively, delivering orders and taking payment, using the cash till or card reader. Kitchen skills focus on preparing hot snacks or light lunches and hot drinks. Kitchen hygiene remains a high priority; the team continually develop their catering and serving skills regularly undertaking training in Health and Hygiene in Food Preparation.
